The U.S. Senate is scheduled to take a crucial vote on Saturday on legislation crafted by majority Democrats to reform the U.S. health care system. Democrats, facing expected unanimous opposition from Republicans in the chamber, need to ensure that all 60 of their members vote in favor of moving ahead to a full debate on the measure. Democratic Majority leader Harry Reid has set the vote for eight o'clock Saturday evening.

The first public congressional hearing on the Fort Hood attack will not include testimony from any current federal law enforcement, military or intelligence officials because the Obama administration "declined to provide any" such witnesses, according to a Senate committee source. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has released the witness list for its hearing "The Fort Hood Attack: A Preliminary Assessment," scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. ET. The list includes four exper

Tomorrow morning, an inter-agency briefing team will go to the Hill to brief House and Senate leaders and committee chairs and ranking members. This is the latest in a series of engagements with the Hill since the horrific events at Fort Hood, and further evidence of the Administration's commitment to appropriately inform Congress without interfering in the prosecution of this case.   -Tommy Vietor

Quit while you're ahead. At the current moment, this is not necessarily a thought for the masses. Unless something dramatic happens on the economic front, most of us are not going to be able to quit — period.

There may be additional e-mails that could have tipped off law enforcement or military officials to the Fort Hood, Texas shooter before he went on his deadly rampage, the chairperson of the Senate Armed Services Committee said on Friday. The latest loser in the political pandemonium over health care reform may be immigrants living in America, an estimated 24 million people likely to be bartered in order to win support in Congress from fence-sitting Democratic moderates and conservatives. Just as House Democratic leaders sacrificed the wishes of abortion-rights activists in a successful gambit to win the votes of anti-abortion Democrats last week, the Senate leadership has included provisions in its health care proposal that would bar any

The Pentagon is launching an urgent review of whether military procedures hinder the identification of servicemembers who pose a threat to their fellow troops. One day next week, perhaps Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will propose passage of a motion to proceed to consideration of his health care reform bill. That would mean only that senators could start arguing and proposing amendments. Republicans will have many amendments, believe me.
